New Monument of City Builders
Between the new parliament and the old opera house a new monument has been placed of the two main architects of the city. Francesco Laperelli da Cortona (d. 1570) and Girolamo Cassar (d. 1592).
Francesco Laperelli had been working for Michelangelo and was an architect for the Pope and the Medici family. He was appointed as the architect of the fortification walls of Valletta after the great Siege of 1565.
Girolamo Cassar was the Maltese military architect and engineer who created many of the monumental buildings and churches for the Order within the wall. The monument shows both architects bend over a drawing of Valletta.
